Deck the…Mantels!

Decorating our mantelpiece(s) for the winter holidays is a big to-do in our house. A chance to add a little extra sparkle to the hearth and cover it with happy holiday ornaments is almost as important as decorating our Christmas tree! Here are a few decorating ideas that we’re drawing inspiration from this season. Stay tuned for the big reveal of our own mantel sometime soon!

On the farm, there is certainly no shortage of kindling. A walk through our property can easily yield a few beautiful branches, twigs with berries, pinecones and ofcourse spare logs. Loving the rustic minimalism of this decor. The natural color palette is simple and elegant. This is a great, and thrifty option for your mantel. I know our girls would love the opportunity to make something like the star garland pictured – a good way to get the whole family into the spirit (and… keep them occupied while we enjoy a little break perhaps??)

This is such a super-luxe look! I could picture this in a chic bachelor pad (great example of a more ‘masculine’ holiday decor…). Once again, a limited color palette of metallic golds, bronzes and silver lends a glamourous and opulent look. In this instance, the design cleverly draws from the natural tones found in the horse painting. Pick up a few shiny ornaments at the dollar store, a tall hurricane vase could work in place of these glass display cases, and either spray paint some twigs with glitter, or purchase some at any florist.

So much to love about this mantel from hymnsandverses.com. First and foremost – the nativity scene up top – absolutely love this. Beautiful and tasteful, and once again, absolutely do-able on a budget for those of you who might be craft-inclined. The “O Holy Night” banner letters are also very unique. This design illustrates an important aspect of great mantel decor: tailoring the ornaments and artwork that sit up top makes all the difference. Consider removing the artwork you normally have there and swapping it out for the season with something more specific to the holidays.

This article wouldn’t be complete without a mantel that displays some classic foliage and garland. Draping some fir and pine with a few twigs and holly over the top of the mantel is typically the way we go here at Trumeau. We’re sticklers for tradition! What I like about this mantel is the use of candles in the hearth. Who says it has to be a fire? This combo of pillars and tea lights adds a beautiful sparkle (that mirror lining helps as well). Candles are also a little easier to manage than a full fire.

Happy Holidays from all of us at Trumeau Stones!
